A number of teams are participating in tournaments around the region this week, despite being on breaks from classes for the holidays.


The Elkin High School Lady Elks basketball team faced East Surry in the Alleghany Christmas Invitational Thursday, but results were not available at press time. The girls are scheduled to meet North Stokes today on the court at 3:30 p.m.


The Buckin’ Elks boys also will face North Stokes today in the Alleghany Christmas Invitation at Alleghany High School in Sparta. The game will be at 2 p.m.


Starmount’s girls hoops team faced South Stokes in the Alleghany tournament Thursday, but no results were available at press time. Today, they hit the court against East Surry in Sparta at 12:30 p.m.


The Rams’ boys basketball team is playing this weekend in the Mount Airy Christmas Classic at Mount Airy High School in Mount Airy and will start the competition against the home team at 6 p.m. today. Games will continue Saturday with Starmount facing Mount Airy at 6 p.m.


Forbush’s boys team is participating in the Colvard Oil Holiday Classic at Ashe County High School with Ashe, Watauga and Hibriten today and Saturday. No schedule was available.


The Falcon grapplers also are competing in the high country this weekend, taking on wrestlers in the Viking Classic at North Wilkes High School, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday.


East Wilkes boys basketball team will face Wilkes Central today at 5:30 p.m. in the Wilkes Window World Cares Classic at West Wilkes.


The Lady Cardinals will meet Wilkes Central at 4 p.m. in the tournament.
