Eagles overcome slow start to best Elkin 52-40
DOBSON — The Golden Eagles overcame a sluggish start to beat Elkin 52-40 Friday night in a non-conference showdown in Dobson.
The Buckin’ Elks shut down Surry Central in the first quarter to grab an early 12-5 lead. Then it was Central’s turn to clamp down the defense, taking the second quarter 15-4 for a 20-16 halftime advantage.
Central stretched the lead to 10 by the end of the third before winning by a dozen.
Tyrek Hayes led with the Elks with 12 points, while Jamiles Hayes and Kody King tallied nine points apiece. Raz Walker added five with Josh Strickland tacking on three points.
Zach Wilmoth posted a game-high 17 points for Surry Central to go with nine rebounds. Freshman Dante Hanner had seven points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
Collins finished with eight points, two assists and two steals and didn’t commit a turnover. Point guard Kirk Needham had seven points, three assists and a steal.
Cole Stewart scored four points, Jake Wilmoth three, Brett Mosley two and Samuel Harris one. Jeremy Patterson had three points and three rebounds in just nine minutes of action.
Elkin fell to 0-6 on the year with the loss, with Central improving to 3-2.
The Elks return to the court Tuesday in the Mountain Valley Conference tip-off against Ashe County at home before a rematch with the Golden Eagles Friday night.
