ELKIN — On the heels of the program’s first conference title in 15 years, the Buckin’ Elks are reloading heading into the 2013-14 season next week.

Elkin graduated four starters and six seniors off last year’s 20-8 team that only lost one Mountain Valley Conference game en route to the league crown, including player of the year Sam Lane.

The Elks will now turn to the junior trio of Kody King, Josh Strickland and Jamiles Hayes to lead the team this season. King and Strickland garnered honorable mentions a year ago as sophomores.

Tyrek Hayes and Josiah Blevins also return to provide senior leadership for Head Coach Kenneth Abrams.

Despite coming off a dismal 2-23 season, the Lady Elks have the makings on paper of being one of the surprise teams in the Mountain Valley Conference in 2013.

Elkin returns leading-scorer Courtney Beals, a two-time all-MVAC honoree, down low, honorable mention point guard Makayla Dimmette and honorable mention three-point specialist Carrie Brown.

But what could be a difference maker is the addition of Starmount-transfer Miracle Walters, who earned an honorable mention last year as a freshman for a formidable starting line-up.

Kaitlin Faw, Kenly Burchette, Bethany Turner and Madeline Carter also return, adding depth for head-man Derek Carter.

Both Elkin teams will open the year next Tuesday against former conference rival Forbush at home. The Elks will have revenge on their mind in the nightcap of the double-header, looking to avenge their lone league loss from last year, a 52-51 setback to the Falcons.

Elkin will open the season with four non-conference games before tipping off league play Dec. 10 against Ashe County at home.

Both squads will suit up during the holidays at the Alleghany Christmas Tournament starting Dec. 27.
