SALISBURY — The Lady Elks punched their ticket to the upcoming North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1A/2A State Golf Championship with a strong performance at Tuesday’s Regional tournament.

Elkin finished second to host Salisbury in the final team standings at the Salisbury Country Club to qualify, edging South Stokes and Gray Stone Day.

Individually, Annika Winebarger posted a 79 to capture a bronze medal, while reigning regional champion Mary Frances Hall finished fourth with an 83.

Salisbury’s Grace Yatawara shot a 72 to win the event, besting her teammate and two-time defending individual state champion Isabella Rusher by four strokes.

Sophomore Palmer Duncan also advanced to the state tournament, giving the Lady Elks three qualifiers.

Elkin will compete in the state championships next Monday and Tuesday at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Pinehurst.
