BOONE — Former Starmount baseball standout Dillon Dobson opened his sophomore campaign at Appalachian State with a bang in the Black and Gold Fall World Series last week in Boone.
Dobson went 3-for-6 with a home run and six RBIs in Black’s series-opening 15-4 victory before adding three more hits in Monday’s 12-7 triumph.
The Hamptonville native then stroked an RBI double Tuesday to lead Black to a three-game sweep with a 3-1 win.
For his efforts, Dobson was named the series’ MVP.
The award came on the heels of a stellar freshman season where he started 53 of 54 games, with the majority of those starts coming at first base where he recorded a team-high 399 put-outs.
Dobson posted a .989 fielding percentage, good for fourth on the squad, with just five errors.
At the plate, he belted a team-high six home runs, while batting .252 with 28 RBIs. Dobson added 10 doubles, two triples, 10 stolen bases, while scoring 40 runs.
The Fall World Series capped fall practices with the opening game of the 2014 season slated for Feb. 14 against Arkansas.
The Mountaineers will host Atlantic Coast Conference powers Notre Dame and Wake Forest in a challenging 56-game schedule released earlier this month.
