MILLERS CREEK — Josh Strickland powered another furious Elkin comeback Friday night against West Wilkes.

A week after battling back late against East Wilkes for the win, the Buckin’ Elks fell behind quickly 14-0 in the first quarter Friday in Millers Creek.

But Strickland and Elkin responded with 22 points in the second stanza as the junior rushed for a 3-yard score before finding Kody King on a 58-yard bomb. Strickland added a two-point pass to Daniel Brinegar and running in another two-point conversion.

In the mix, Jamiles Hayes added a 5-yard touchdown run as the Elks took a 22-21 lead into the locker room.

Both offenses were held in check in the third quarter, but the Elkin defense came up big in the frame, forcing an intentional grounding penalty in the endzone for a safety.

Strickland used his legs to pull away from the pesky Blackhawks in the fourth, finding paydirt from three yards out before breaking off a wild 56-yarder to seal the 36-21 victory.

Elkin out-gained West Wilkes 424-388 to win easily, led by Strickland’s 365 yards of total offense (229 yards passing, 96 yards rushing) and four touchdowns.

King hauled in a pair of catches for 95 yards, while Tyrek Hayes and Brinegar snag five catches apiece. Cory Anderson added 81 yards on the ground.

Elkin improved to 5-3 on the season and evened its Mountain Valley Conference record to 2-2, jumping to fourth place in the league standings.

The Elks return to the field Friday on the road against defending conference champ Wilkes Central in Moravian Falls.
