Rams roll over West Wilkes 40-21

MILLERS CREEK - The Rams potent offense was on full display Friday night up the mountain in Millers Creek.
Starmount rolled up nearly 450 yards of total offense, pulling away from West Wilkes in the second half to notch the impressive 40-21 victory.
Leading the charge — back in his familiar position at running back — was Will Simpson. The senior scored touchdown runs of 5, 10 and 7 yards in the second half to build up the Rams’ lead out to 20 points.
Simpson tallied 104 yards on the night on 19 carries for an average of 5.47 yards per attempt. Besting his teammate was Aaron Skeens, who reeled off a team-high 127 yards on the ground on just seven attempts (18.14 yards per rush) with a touchdown.
Joe Walker (37 yards), Ken Kelly (26) Brandon Lopez (25) and Zach Freed (24) helped Starmount record 353 rushing yards as a team, averaging just over six yards a rush.
The Rams need every yard to separate from a scrappy West Wilkes side, who jumped out to a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
But from there, Starmount scored 27 unanswered points - helped by recovering four West fumbles - to grab a comfortable 34-14 cushion in the fourth quarter.
The Blackhawks battled back with a 72-yard strike under five minutes to play, but Kelly found paydirt from 25 yards out to ice the 40-21 victory for the visitors.
Starmount improved to 4-2 on the year, while upping their Mountain Valley Conference mark to 2-0.
The Rams return to the field Friday against defending league champ Wilkes Central in Moravian Falls.
The rematch has last its luster with the Eagles struggling mightily, sitting at 1-5 on the season.
