DOBSON — The Surry Community College volleyball team has a solid base of sophomore leadership that Head Coach Jan Marion-Kiser hopes will improve the team’s chances of winning in the Region X conference.

Surry won against Rockingham Community College on Tuesday in the home opener 3-0.

The Lady Knights jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the opening set forcing a Rockingham timeout.

They never trailed after taking the first set, 25-14 behind the offensive play of Samantha Dimmette.

This year’s team is made up of 10 players with four sophomores: Alexis Allen from Mount Airy, Brooke Johnson from North Surry, Samantha Dimmette from Elkin and Madison Jessup from East Surry. Six players are freshmen: Tiffany Coe of Surry Central, Dana Brown of Mount Airy, Ashley Smith of East Surry, Shay Hampton of South Stokes, Cassidy Gregory of East Wilkes and Maddison Hawks of North Surry.

Dimmette recorded six kills in the opening set, while Maddison Hawks notched three kills to go along with a service ace. Defensively, sophomore Madison Jessup recorded six digs in the first set to lead the Lady Knights.

In the second set, Surry broke an 11-11 tie and outscored the Lady Eagles, 14-8 to take the set, 25-19. Dimmette and Brooke Johnson each recorded four kills in the set with Hawks notching three service aces. Freshman Dana Brown dished out five assists to help the Lady Knights take a 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Surry and Rockingham played to an early 10-10 tie before the Lady Knights once again pulled away with stellar play. Dimmette recorded four kills while Johnson added three service aces in the final set.

“We are continuing to build both offensively and defensively,” said Marion-Kiser. “We were able to get everyone some needed playing time and continue to improve their skills.”

Overall, Surry was led offensively by Dimmette’s 14 kills. Johnson and Hawks added six kills each. Brown dished out a total of 13 assists with freshman Ashley Smith from East Surry contributing nine assists. Hawks led the Lady Knights defensively with 11 digs, while Jessup and Brown each added eight digs each.

Johnson recorded four blocks with freshman Shay Hampton adding three blocks.

“We have several areas that we can hopefully continue to improve throughout the season,” added Marion-Kiser.

Surry (1-2, 0-1 in Region X) returns to action today and will host Davidson County Community College at home beginning at 7 p.m the SCC Gymnasium on the main campus. There is no admission charge.

“We have a very busy schedule this season with a lot of traveling this year. I really feel like because we have strong sophomores returning that we will have strong leadership on the court this season,” said Marion-Kiser.

The Lady Knights have 28 matches this season not including end of the season tournament matches.

“Our focus has been to use the strength that we have with our hitters and quickness of our defense,” said Marion-Kiser.

The freshmen players have a strong showing even with two injured players. Cassidy Gregory from East Wilkes has an injured ankle and was not able to start out the season.

“She is a strong hitter and will give us strength in hitting and blocking when she returns,” said Marion-Kiser.

Tiffany Coe came off the the injured list and is playing outside, and in the defensive specialist role. Maddison Hawks from North Surry is going to serve the team in a variety of positions with great passing abilities. She is going to be hitting from the outside to open the season.

Ashley Smith will give the team some height on the front row and will play setter and right side. Shay Hampton will give the Lady Knights a big presence in the middle. She will continue to work on being one of strong hitter/blockers on the team. Dana Brown will anchor the setting position.

“She has great hands and will be the quarterback on the floor making sure our hitters have the ball to hit,” Marion-Kiser said.

Last year, the Lady Knights finished fifth in conference.
