CONCORD - Playing through the Fourth of July holiday, the Surry Storm saved plenty of fireworks for the basketball court last week in Concord.

The Storm, made up fourth-grade girls from around the Yadkin Valley, breezed through the competition unbeaten to capture the gold medal at the American Youth Basketball Association National Tournament on July 4.

In addition to its team gold medal, Surry also competed in the skills portion of the tournament, winning the team shooting competition and had both the three-point contest champion and hot shot champion.

The Storm are made up of girls from Virginia and Surry, Stokes, Yadkin and Wilkes counties, and are coached by Darrick Betts and Russ Lambert.

Team members include: Dasia Lambert, Drea Betts, Emma Kiger, Tessa Stovall, Raydan Hawks, Jamesyn Bell, Kenlie Edwards, Lakien Vernon, Kelsie Huffman and Mikinly Speer.
