On March 21, members of the Yadkin Valley Action citizens group along with other citizens and constituents from the Yadkin Valley of Congressional District 5 concerned about the national security of the United States visited the local offices of Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis and Representative Virginia Foxx to present an open letter regarding two of the many issues threatening the national security of our country.
The letter asked that, as their elected representatives, Burr, Tillis and Foxx exercise their authority for oversight of the executive branch in a non-partisan fashion with a focus on what is best for our country, specifically:
1. Endorse the appointment of an independent counsel and/or bi-partisan committee to fully investigate any relationships, personal or business, between Donald Trump, his immediate family and any member of his administration and any Russian officials and businesses, including, and especially, Vladimir Putin.
2. Demand full transparency and disclosure of all of Donald Trump’s and Trump family financial dealings, loan sources, partnerships, and taxes.
Burr is the Republican leader of the Senate Intelligence Committee leading the investigation into the Russian connections. Foxx is a member of the Congressional Oversight Committee, one of three committees able to subpoena the President’s tax returns. Tillis sits on the Armed Services Committee of which the national security is a key focus.
The citizens who presented this letter believe strongly that these issues are closely related and pose a risk to the security of the nation. Their position is that the elected representatives, regardless of party affiliation, must take action to ensure that the country and its leaders are not beholden to any foreign power for any reason.
At each location, there was a short statement and moment of prayer.
