Teachers Lynn Barber and Kristi Day were awarded fellowships by the Rural Trust Global Teacher Fellowship Program for their visit to Finland during the summer.

The program awards up to 25 fellowships to support professional and personal development of rural teachers. Teachers are encouraged to center their learning in an international travel and study experience, out of which they develop interdisciplinary, place-based learning curricula aligned with their specific state and local content standards.

When asked about their experiences in Finland, Barber and Day collaborated on a statement, “The Rural Global Teaching Fellowship was an amazing opportunity. In this day and age where education sees more and more cutbacks every day, it was a wonderful feeling to be given the chance to write our own learning experience and have it valued and funded.

“The trip to Finland allowed us to observe first hand one of the most successful school systems in the world. In talking to their teachers and teacher educators at the university level, we were able to look at education through a lens much different than here in the United States.

“The global travel and experiences we had enriched us both personally and professionally. We would encourage Wilkes County teachers to think about taking advantage of all this Fellowship has to offer.”

Any K-12 teacher working full-time and teaching at least 60 percent time in a rural community can apply for the Rural Trust Global Teacher Fellowship. Counselors, media specialists and other school personnel working in a teaching setting for at least 60 percent of their paid work time may also apply.

Barber is a teacher at North Wilkesboro Elementary School and at the time of the trip. Day was a teacher at Traphill Elementary School and is now employed by the Department of Public Instruction as a K-5 English Language Arts Consultant.

Applications for the 2014 Fellowship Program are now open. The website is www.globalteacherfellowship.ruraledu.org/index.html.
