The write-in ballot process for North Carolina elections is an opportunity for registered voters to usher in candidates of choice who did not make the traditional ballot, according to a spokesperson from the North Carolina Board of Elections. Sometimes the names submitted by voters are of fictitious names, and many times voters use the vote to make a statement.

“Mickey Mouse is always popular. One time we had King Kong,” said the spokesperson from the N.C. Board of Elections.

In Elkin, however, seven write-in ballots were received in Tuesday’s municipal elections with no fictitious character receiving a vote, according to records at the Surry County Board of Elections.

Names submitted in Elkin Precinct 1 included Steve Bovenger, Dan Whelan and Debbie Carson. In Elkin Precinct 2 write-ins included Hal Robinson, Ralph Beshears, Joe Walker and John Cory Combs.

In comparison, neighboring Mount Airy used the opportunity to express political frustration with its slate of choices.

According to the Surry County Board of Elections, “Any One Else” received a couple of write-in votes in Mount Airy Precinct 4, “No One” secured a vote in Mount Airy Precinct 3, “Someone Else” also joined Mount Airy Precinct 3, with “Do Better” checking in for Mount Airy Precinct 1.
