A $2 dollar bill led to the arrest of a suspect in a wallet-swiping incident that happened in John Boys.

Randy Lee Mcgee, 49, was charged with larceny.

On Sunday morning, Cornice Ray Barker, 49, paid for breakfast at John Boys located at 796 Elkin Hwy 268, according to records with the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office.

Barker said he had dropped his wallet, not realizing he did so until he went looking for it after he paid for his breakfast.

According to the report, a bystander observed Randy Lee Mcgee, who allegedly approached the counter area and picked up an item off the floor very quickly before placing it in his pocket.

When a store employee had asked Mcgee what he had picked up off the floor, he told them that he had dropped his wallet, the sheriff’s office release said.

Police say the employees at John Boys started looking through the trash can that Mcgee had walked by on his way to sit down. The wallet was found in the trash can, but no money inside.

The report states that Mcgee went into the women’s rest room at John Boys, and he then went over to the Kangaroo store and went in the men’s room.

The suspect was approached by a deputy at the Kangaroo store.

The deputy wrote in the report that Mcgee had $181 “nice and straight” cash in his wallet, plus he had another $40 or $50 “crumbled up and nasty where it had gotten wet in the past.”

The suspect said he didn’t know how much money he had or why some was kept “neat” and the “rest all wrinkled up,” according to the report.

The deputy was told that the victim also originally had a $2 bill in his wallet, the report said. The deputy checked the trash can in the Kangaroo men’s rest room and found the $2 bill as the victim had described it.

According to the report, the “straight money” that was in Mcgee’s possession was given back to Barker, along with the $2 bill that was found in the trash.
