To the editor,
Welcome Back Buckin’ Elks!
The 2014-2015 school year officially begins on August 18 as teachers and staff return to Elkin City Schools. Students will begin classes on August 25.
Staff and students are to be commended for their work last year as our school system was recognized for having the “highest percentage of teachers meeting or exceeding student growth expectations in North Carolina.” It was also a phenomenal year as teachers in grades 4-8 implemented our STEAM infused educational program. This school year our staff in grades Pre-k thru 12 will begin our second year of STEAM infused education as all teachers went through professional development activities this summer to prepare them to integrate STEAM concepts into his/her classroom through Project Based Learning (PBL’s).
Continuing our efforts to provide an excellent education for every student, our focus is on building a school system of significance that prepares each student for his/her goal of future academic endeavors in college and his/her career. The impact of our work in the school system should reverberate throughout our community as it impacts students, staff, families, and local/state businesses in building a better tomorrow for all in the Yadkin Valley.
New staff to the ECS family for the 2014-2015 school year include: Billy Brown, Leslie Hooper, Jill Allen, Sara Bemisdarfer, Julie Gilley & Nick Tomlin.
Open House will be held Thursday afternoon, August 21 at our schools. Elkin Elementary School will hold its Open House from 5:00-7:00 P.M., Elkin Middle School from 6:00-8:00 P.M., and Elkin High School from 4:00-6:00 P.M . Your child’s teachers are anxious to meet you and speak to you about the upcoming school year. And please make sure to update all student/parent information, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses for the upcoming year. This will ensure that your emergency contact information is correct for our personal communications and ALERT NOW, our home-school communication network. We encourage all parents to attend the Open House, get to know your child’s teachers, and to team with us to play an active role in the upcoming school year.
The beginning of the school year is an exciting time. Our administrative and teaching staff looks forward to our “Journey of Significance” as we become the first STEAM infused educational system in North Carolina and impact public education through caring staff, high academic expectations for student, and the support of parents, community and business. My administrative staff and I can be reached at the ECS Administrative Office at 835-3135. And, don’t forget to visit ECS on the web or drop me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“It’s another great day to be a Buckin’ Elk.”
