A Yadkin County bus taking children to school overturned Tuesday morning, leaving 11 injured.
School Bus 146 was traveling on Summertime Road between Griffin and Sugartown Road. The wreck happened at approximately 7:17 a.m., according to the NC Highway Patrol’s Kevin Hennelly.
“The bus was coming down the hill and it went through the curve and went off into a field on the opposite side, and overturned onto its side,” School Superintendent Dr. Todd Martin said. “It didn’t roll over, it just turned over on its side.”
There were 20 students on board: four from the middle school, fourteen from Forbush High, and three from the Yadkin County Early College High School.
The driver was Pamela Gail Cline of Yadkinville.
Cline has been driving for the school system for 29 years, according to a press release Tuesday afternoon from Yadkin County Schools.
“Eleven, including the driver, were taken to local medical facilities,” Martin said.
“Ten of the students were injured, and transported to - six to Baptist Hospital, four to Yadkin Valley Community Hospital,” Hennelly said. “The injuries were scrapes and bruises and shoulder pain.”
Cline was also taken to Yadkin Valley Community Hospital.
According to the school system Cline and most of the students had been treated and released by 3 p.m. Tuesday.
A student onboard the bus was the first to alert 911 to the crash, Martin said.
“Highway Patrol responded, Yadkin County Sheriff’s Department, Yadkin County EMS, Yadkinville Fire Department responded, and also, if I’m not mistaken, Davie EMS responded,” Martin said. “And I think Surry County was on the way, but they got everything under control.”
The students who were not taken for treatment were picked up by their parents at the scene, according to Hennelly.
The road was closed to traffic following the wreck. Officials had removed the bus from the scene by 9:30 a.m. and reopened the road.
Yadkin County Schools said the appropriate state agencies have already been contacted regarding the payment of medical expenses.
The Highway Patrol is still investigating.
