A Daniel Boone trail marker has been placed in Elkin.

A dedication ceremony showcasing the Boone Highway Trail Memorial Marker was held on Sept. 10.

The Elkin Valley Trails Association has been deep trenched into the building of trails in Wilkes County and Surry County and in particular are working on trails that traverse the Elkin Valley.

EVTA members discovered in their search for trails that the Boone Trail Highway was located in Wilkes and Surry County; they found that a monument was slated for placement in Elkin in about 1921.

A granite arrowhead-shaped marker now sits on the old ‘Hippo lot’ located on the southwest corner of W. Market St. and N. Bridge St. The granite comes from a Mount Airy company.

Town of Elkin officials are not only standing behind EVTA’s efforts, but they’re rolling up their sleeves and are working behind the scenes on trail development.

Mayor Lestine Hutchens served as official master of ceremonies for the event.

“This is a great day for Elkin and demonstrates our commitment to make Elkin a trail town,” said Hutchens. “We have a vibrant community, a great downtown, and wonderful trails are in the making.”

According to Hutchens, trails and tourism that comes with it is a win-win for Elkin.

The Boone Trail Highway Memorial Marker #104 was unveiled by Dr. William Blackley, Chairperson of Elkin Valley Trails Association, and his trailblazer counterpart, Joe Hicks.

Everett Gary Marshall, author of “Rich Man: Daniel Boone,” offered a historical presentation.

Present were all members of the Elkin Board of Commissioners, Surry County Commissioner Eddie Harris, state Senator Shirely Randleman, Dr. Randy Bledsoe of Elkin City Schools, and other dignitaries.

In a post-ceremony held at the Elkin Center, former U.S. Sen. James Broyhill provided a perspective about the Overmountain Trail and the Battle of Kings Mountain, said EVTA officials.
