Tommy Ann Tulbert took a wooden chest she found at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in Elkin and did just that - restored it.

With some black paint, wallpaper-lined drawers, and the names of the streets in Elkin, Tulbert breathed new life into a piece of furniture that had been donated and forgotten.

Now she’s turning it back over to the ReStore to raise money in Habitat’s annual “Art for Homes” event.

“Arts for Homes” is an initiative by the Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity that’s held annually. The event began in 2009 and will be held this year at Elkin Creek Vineyard, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.

Local artists, professional and amateur alike, take items from the ReStore and turn them into one-of-a-kind works of art. When they finish they bring them back the ReStore where they sit just inside the front door for visitors to look at - but not buy.

Not yet, anyway. The buying comes later when the event takes place at Elkin Creek. Auctioneer Kevin Hayworth will auction off the items with the help of UYV Habitat board members.

The location is new this year. Prior to partnering with Elkin Creek “Art for Homes” was held in the ReStore building itself.

This year the Harvest Barn at the winery will serve as the auction site.

Live music will be performed during the evening by Fiddle Dee Dee, a local group made up of Tulbert, Naomi Orr, Jennifer Weddington and other musicians.

The band has performed for the last four years at the events.

Elkin Creek Vineyard is located at 318 Elkin Creek Mill Road in Elkin. For more information contact Habitat for Humanity at 336-526-2277 or email them at habitat@UYVhabitat.org.
