A bridge contractor has been selected to build an 80-foot pedestrian footbridge in Elkin for the Elkin and Allegheny trail.
The company selected is Big R Bridge of Virginia.
The footbridge project is spearheaded by the Town of Elkin, which is working in collaboration with the Elkin Valley Trails Association.
“The trails association set a goal to complete this first bridge crossing on the E & A trail. Their sole purpose is to provide a scenic walking trail that will benefit the citizens of Elkin and those who enjoy the outdoors,” said Adam W. McComb, director of the Elkin Recreation & Parks Department.
“The bridge company will proceed into developing construction drawings, which will take several weeks. Once those are complete and approved by the EVTA and Town, fabrication will begin,” said McComb.
Bridge delivery is expected to be near the beginning of November.
The cost of the bridge construction is $45,861.47. CONTECH and EXCELBridge also submitted competitive bids, but were not the lowest, according to records.
“The EVTA gave the money the town to pay for the bridge,” said Dr. Bill Blackley of the EVTA. “It will be the town’s bridge and trail. The bridge will be built about 200 feet up river from the Shoe Factory Dam.”
