The Elkin Municipal Pool opened on Saturday and swimmers and sun lovers alike were enjoying the day.
“It’s a fun environment, just come have fun,” said Tommy Wheeler, assistant manager of the pool.
Wheeler said that the most important thing, safety wise, for folks to remember in any pool or body of water this summer is to never swim alone. He also said it was important for swimmers to be aware and obey the rules posted at the pool.
“All the rules we have are designed for safety so the important thing is to just obey all the rules that we have in effect,” Wheeler said.
Frank Miller has been a life guard for four summers now at the Elkin pool and said it is a fun job and he enjoys getting to be with his friends who are fellow lifeguards.
Katelyn Reece, a three-year veteran lifeguard at the Elkin pool, said she also loved the camaraderie with her co-workers at the pool.
“I work pretty much with all my best friends and I love working outside so it’s really nice to be outside,” Reece said. “You have to be cautious all the time, but at the same time it’s a relaxing job.”
Reece also said two important things to remember when enjoying the pool this summer is to bring along plenty of sunscreen and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
The pool is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.; Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Lap swim times are from 11:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday; 7 to 8 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
