Cadet Sidney McMillian receives the Hunley Award from Commander Terry Lee Tucker of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, J.E.B. Stuart Camp #1598. The JROTC Awards Program was held at Elkin High School on May 14. The Hunley Award is given to a cadet who has shown the core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. It is named after the H.L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink another vessel in combat during the War Between the States, and in memory of those crewmen who sacrificed their lives to serve their homeland.
