ELKIN — Weyerhaeuser’s Oriented Strand Board facility in Elkin announced Friday plans for a partnership with Surry County and the Elkin Valley Trails Association (EVTA) to provide an easement across a portion of its property, which will become part of the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Representatives of Weyerhaeuser, Surry County and the EVTA are working on finalizing the terms of the easement.

The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is North Carolina’s premier hiking trail. It stretches 1,000 miles from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks stopping at many of North Carolina’s most beautiful places along the way.

“Weyerhaeuser has been an active part of the greater Elkin community since we started operations in 1986. Our employees and their families live, work and play here and we are thrilled to be able to provide access through our property for this amazing and historic North Carolina Mountains-to-Sea Trail,” said Cathy Slater, senior vice president for Weyerhaeuser’s Engineered Products and Distribution business. “Several of our employees are also EVTA volunteers and they are very excited to be engaged in the planning and construction of this local section” added Slater.

Maintenance of the trail will be sponsored by Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and partners in local communities like the EVTA. EVTA is a nonprofit group of volunteers working toward completion of the section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail section between Stone Mountain State Park and Elkin.

Weyerhaeuser Company, one of the world’s largest private owners of timberlands, began operations in 1900. The company owns or controls more than 6 million acres of timberlands, primarily in the U.S., and manage another 14 million acres under long-term licenses in Canada. The company manages these timberlands on a sustainable basis in compliance with internationally recognized forestry standards.

Weyerhauser is also one of the largest manufacturers of wood and cellulose fibers products, and develops real estate, primarily as a builder of single-family homes. The company is a real estate investment trust. In 2012, it generated $7.1 billion in sales and employed about 13,200 people who serve customers worldwide.

In North Carolina, Weyerhaeuser employs more than 1,000 at nine locations across the state and grows nearly 550,000 acres of timber.
