The runners gear up to begin the Habitat Hammer 5K in Elkin on Saturday, a charity run benefiting the Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity organization.


And they’re off! Racers in the Habitat Hammer 5K start this charity run on Saturday at the sound of an air horn.


Blake Poplin, 16, of Elkin, comes in first place in the men’s category in the Habitat Hammer 5K on Saturday, running the 3.1-mile course through Elkin park and downtown Elkin in 18 minutes and 50 seconds.


Johanna Niccloy, 31, of Elkin, comes in first in the women’s category at the Habitat Hammer 5K on Saturday.
