The 2014-15, 12-month Elkin City Schools calendar was approved last week by Elkin school board members and is comprised of 180 days, or 1,062 hours.
The first day of school and the first grading period will begin on Aug. 25. It will be 46 days ending on Oct. 28 followed by the second grading period of 43 days, ending on Jan. 16. The third grading period is 46 days and ends March 26; the fourth and final grading period is 45 days long and ends June 9. There are five make-up days built in the approved 2014-15 school calendar for inclement weather consideration.
Students will be out of school for holidays and work days on Sept. 1, Oct. 31, Nov. 11, Nov. 26-28, Dec. 22-Jan. 2, Jan. 19-20, Feb. 16, March 27, April 3-10 and May 25. Early release days include Sept. 26, Oct. 30, Dec. 19, Jan. 16, March 26 and June 9.
A final copy of the approved calendar that includes scheduled grading periods, student and teacher holidays, teacher workdays and early dismissal dates may be found on Elkin City Schools’ website http://elkin.k12.nc.us under the Calendar tab.
A recent change in the school calendar came this year with a “guideline of hours” instead of the number of days in attendance requirement when it was adopted as the legal standard. Legally, Elkin City Schools must attend 1025 hours, said. Elkin City Schools Superintendent Randy Bledsoe.
With that being the case, Bledsoe said the school was still looking to go beyond the minimum in pursuit of academic excellence.
March is designated “Arts In the School” month.
