Garbage collection in the town of Elkin has been suspended for Wednesday.
“Due to low temperatures and snow from yesterday’s storm Wednesday, garbage collection will be delayed until Thursday,” said Anne Peck of Elkin’s Public Works Department.
“The garbage collection regularly scheduled for Thursday will be completed Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. The town of Elkin Public Works Department is currently working on clearing primary and secondary roads of snow. This will be a continuous process due to the sub-freezing temperatures and subsequent refreezing. We appreciate the communities patience during this process,” continued Peck.
North Carolina is under a state of emergency because of weather conditions.
The state of emergency declaration enables the governor to mobilize the necessary resources to respond to a storm. It also is the first step in seeking federal funds to help defray the cost of providing emergency services, clearing debris and repairing any damaged public infrastructure.
It is unknown if the town of Elkin has sustained any damage due to the winter blast, but an assessment after the storm will be performed by town officials.
