Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital scored major awards this week after it was named the 2014 Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Hospitals in Obstetrics, and for being ranked as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals in Patient Experience.


According to WomenCertified and its Women’s Choice Award committee, HCMH ranks as the best full service hospital voted by women of all winning hospitals in North Carolina.


The hospital celebrated the award with a Tuesday afternoon reception located in the hospital lobby. Hospital staff and local dignitaries attended the celebration.


“We are very honored and proud of achieving these prestigious distinctions,” said Paul Hammes, Hugh Chatham’s Chief Executive Officer. “It speaks very highly to the hard work and dedication of our physicians and staff who are committed to ensuring every patient receives exemplary care and attentive service.”


Hammes also highlighted the personal story of a patient who recently attended the maternity unit and was living below the federal poverty level. He said that staff rallied together to help get the patient have a fresh start to motherhood by donating items to the new family.


“This is an example of the hearts of employees working here,” said Hammes.


Mayor Lestine Hutchens said that she’s so proud of HCMH and that the award showcases the greatness of Elkin’s largest employer.


“I know the great work the hospital does and the commitment shown by each employee. Today is a moment to celebrate and I congratulate HCMH for getting such a distinguished honor,” said Hutchens.


Women make or influence more than 90 percent of health care decisions for themselves and their families, according to a study published by the American Academy of Family Physicians. These awards signal that Hugh Chatham meets or exceeds the expectations and needs of its patients, and it helps people make a more informed decision about where they choose to receive care for themselves and their families.


HCMH is A private, not-for-profit hospital that employs over 900 people, and it is served by more than 70 physicians representing 26 specialties and sub specialties.
