Christmas has not been forgotten for residents of the ARK.

The Foothills Quilters requested a count of all children and adults using the shelter located in Elkin. In return, the quilters have rallied together to make more than two dozen quilts for ARK residents and other charities.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Foothills Quilters presented quilts to ARK executive director Theresa Knops.

The ARK provides shelter and supportive services to homeless families and single women who are not victims of domestic violence.

According to a Foothills Quilter, since 2008, the quilting organization has been actively making quilts for Elkin’s most vulnerable.

“We do this because we quilters want to give back to the community in a charitable way. We all bring a piece of this talent for a great cause,” said LeAnne Mantero of the Foothills Quilters.

“We take account how many quilts are needed. It’s Christmas time and we always make sure that nobody goes without a quilt,” she said.

Last year, Mantero indicated that she personally made eight quilt tops (the exterior part of the quilt). The section is passed to another set of quilters who sandwich it together with the quilt batting (its middle) and the backing.

The fabric is machine sewn.

Amy Askins of Mount Airy volunteers her long-arm quilting skills. Binding was done by Carol McDowell.

Fabric is donated by the community.
