Elkin City Schools Principal of the Year Pam Tolbert challenged educators to be significant for all the students upon their return to the school year in Elkin City Schools Convocation on Monday.
Tolbert referenced those who have influenced education, teachers and famous people in all areas of discipline, including Margaret Flowers and Fred Wright. She reminded the difference mentors have made in educators’ and students’ lives daily.
In the speech, Tolbert used a metaphor of gem-mining and related it to the importance of teachers teaching kids and its significance in the classroom.
Teaching is like a form of rock tumbling, said Tolbert. She reminded it is the task of educators to bring out the best of the gems in the classroom, that may not always stand out.
She said to maintain learning requires polishing each gem in the rock tumbling element of the classroom. That helps bring out significance, she said.
“Your job is to be of significance,” stated the ECS Principal of the Year in closing to colleagues.
