Elkin High School announced recently the hiring of a new guidance counselor, Julie Gentry, and science teacher, Leslie Hooper.
Elkin High School Principal Joel Hoyle said he felt Gentry was the type of person who would get to know the students and be what they are looking for to meet the needs of any at-risk students. She brings an M.A. in educational school counseling from William and Mary College.
“Our goal is to see everybody graduate,” said Hoyle. The principal reminded that home issues can and do affect kids and that it is important to address that in a learning environment.
He said Hooper will bring a great addition as a science teacher with an M.A. in educational leadership from the American College of Education and experience in teaching from Surry Central High School. He said she has a hands-on style of teaching.
ECS School Superintendent Dr. Randy Bledsoe said he was pleased with the new additions and what they will bring to the ECS system.
