The Elkin City Schools met in an open meeting on Wednesday to authorize the ECS Interim Budget Resolution for the fiscal 2015 year.
In the meeting, the school board authorized that the superintendent and director of business and financial services be able to expend funds necessary for the purpose of paying salaries and the usual ordinary expenses of the local administrative unit for the interval between the beginning of the fiscal year on July 1 and the adoption of the budget resolution by the state.
This includes funds from state, local, federal, capital outlay, child nutrition, after-school child care and special revenue.
ECS Director of Business and Finance Services Jan Zachary said the meeting is required every year and the school system is required to possess an interim budget for the 2014-15 year.
Zachary said the last fiscal year, Elkin City Schools fell within all budget guidelines and spent all state funding that could not carry over.
The total budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year was $11,442,279.51, said Zachary.
Zachary said the next board meeting, they hope to have the 2014-15 budget passed by the General Assembly. She said they are waiting on decisions from the legislature on upcoming budget issues.
Zachary and Elkin City Schools Superintendent Dr. Randy Bledsoe said they hope to have budget information in July.
Bledsoe said the big question among educators and teachers is… “Are they going to develop a budget that balances itself on eliminating educators?”
