The second CRUISE! Downtown Elkin of the season will kick off Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m. and celebrate the old miracle mile with music by the Backwater Band, who will play ’70s music.

Rain or shine the CRUISE! Downtown Elkin will go on, said Secretary of Downtown Elkin Inc. Vicki Roberts.

A highlight featured at Saturday’s cruise event will be the showing off of Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Pace Car and Lug nut, which is their mascot. The Pace Car is used in Charlotte NASCAR races.

In her fourth year of planning the Cruise Downtown Elkin events, Roberts said attendance was awesome in the first one held this summer. In the second CRUISE! this weekend, Roberts said she looks forward to an event complete with music, many of the merchants open and more nonprofit groups set up to sell goods to customers.

She emphasized a main goal of the event is to help existing business merchants located in the downtown area, and to relive earlier nostalgia associated with the miracle mile and old cars.

This CRUISE! Downtown Elkin event will have judging for anyone wanting to register their car for showing.

Roberts said show up at the Wells Fargo parking lot to get a number for judging requirements or contact Vicki Roberts at 336-244-5662. Anyone interested in setting up and vending may call Roberts at the number listed.

The cruising loop will start at the Wells Fargo parking located on West Main Street, have a turn at the Elkin Public Library and follow Standard Street up to East Main Street to complete the traditional loop.

Mountain Park Rescue Squad will be selling homemade lemonade. Ebenezer Church will raise money for the church by selling funnel cakes, popcorn, homemade cakes and cookies.

Roberts said the Yadkin Valley Latin Club will wear poodle skirts for the occasion. They also will sell bottled Cokes, peanuts and Moon Pies to raise money for the North Carolina Junior Classical League.

Elkin downtown merchant, Royalls’ known for its hot dogs, will be open, said Roberts.

Additional dates of the CRUISE! Downtown Elkin for this season are July 26, Aug. 23 and Sept. 27 from 4 to 9 p.m.
