Alma and Coley Gaffney celebrated 75 years of marriage on May 10. The duo were surrounded by friends and family in a reception held at Pirate’s Landing.

Alma Gaffney recently gave advice on how to sustain a long marriage.

“God kept us together. We have been very happy. Our children have made us happy. The older we get is the closer we have grown to each other,” said Alma Gaffney. “My wish is that young people would not give up so easily on marriage.”

Gaffney said all relationships have ups and downs. “You just have to take it easy and put life in God’s hands,” she said.

“Just be patient and things will come,” said Coley Gaffney.

The happy couple met in Lincolnton where they grew up knowing each other since elementary school. After high school, the duo both went on to serve in the military during World War II serving in the U.S. Army.

After the duo served the country, they were married on May 13, 1939.

“We had spent most of our years Cramerton, because we were in textile management. He was a ball player, too,” said Alma Gaffney.

“We have been in Elkin since 1985. We retired here. We have enjoyed it very much. We enjoy fishing and golf, and all of the things that are happening in the area,” she said.

Gaffney said growing older with marriage means growing wiser.

Alma also said that one of the joys of aging and both being age 93 is eating out. “My body won’t let me cook anymore. That’s OK because I much rather go out to eat… We could use a few more restaurants around here.”

The Gaffneys are members of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
