The first CRUISE! Downtown Elkin of the season will kick off Saturday with an antique festival and be held the fourth Saturday of every month through September.
Organizer and Secretary of the Main Street Merchant Association Vicky Roberts said cruisin’ the main drag goes back to the old days some 30 years ago when people enjoyed making the same lap from Main Street to East Standard Street. Then, it took two to three hours just to finish one lap. It will be especially nostalgic for some who may remember cruising the “ol’ miracle mile,” she said.
Roberts said she expects around 1,000 cars to show up and lots of people on Saturday. She said they will be selling “CRUISE” annual T-shirts, sunglasses and other souvenir goods from Main to Standard Street. WIFM will be broadcasting with era-type music from 4 to 9 p.m., said Roberts. For more information, Roberts may be reached at 336-244-5662.
Additional dates of the CRUISE! Downtown Elkin for this season are June 28, July 26, Aug. 23 and Sept. 27 from 4 to 9 p.m. The first and last will feature an antique festival.
Rickey Roberts, owner of Elkin Antiques and Collectibles Mall, said he expects a large variety of goods with around 30 vendors to kick it off. In the lot above Elkin Antiques and Collectibles Mall, located at 131 S. Bridge St., there will be vendors lining up to the railroad, said Roberts, who opened his business in October of 2012.
Antique vendors will start selling at 8 a.m and go until 9 p.m.with a food vendor selling home-made food from a local church. In addition, Rickey Roberts said there will be lots of Randolph County and Catawba County pottery, handmade quilts, blue jars and mason jars, popular for use in weddings.
Some items he listed that are specialty items include primitives and Victorian and antiques, coins and paper money, lots of glass, and lots of tobacco tins. The next antique festival with the CRUISE will be held the last Saturday of September which also is the day of the pumpkin festival.
Vicki Roberts said Jody Goodwill will bring the motorcycle that he built for competition in a popular Discovery channel episode and it will be on display at 222 Public House. It was cut by Goodwill and pasted from parts.
The CRUISE Downtown Elkin organizer added, “We encourage people to come down and see what is in the town, its historic part and be part of it. Come and share the day with us.”
