Elkin’s Walmart donated a slew of plants toward an effort that brighten up downtown streets.

After being notified of the beautification of the downtown planters, Walmart Store Manager Trent Holbrook jumped on the opportunity.

“Walmart was kind enough to donate flowers this spring — enough to fill all of the planters along Main, Bridge, Church and Market streets. The cost of buying flowers for the downtown seasonally adds up quickly for the Main Street Advisory Board, and Mr. Holbrook was extremely gracious when I placed the call,” said Laura Gaylord, Main Street and community manager.

According to Gaylord, the Main Street Advisory Board not only manages the grants, murals, bike racks and other aesthetics downtown, they also make sure the planters and other locations around downtown are pleasing from all entrances, and plants help add color and warmth to the cozy Main Street district.

The board also is responsible for planting around the Welcome to Elkin sign near the Yadkin River, the whiskey barrel flower pots near the library, and organized the planting of the wild flowers along Big Elkin Creek, which were planted by the Elkin High School Environmental Club as a group project last winter.

“We love working with various groups throughout the community who are willing to help us make the downtown special. We’re very grateful for the fantastic management team at Elkin’s Walmart who worked together with us to bring lots of beautiful color to the streets of downtown,” Gaylord said.
