WILKESBORO — East Wilkes celebrated its high school prom over the weekend at the nearby Stone Center to a theme based on the 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, “The Great Gatsby.”
It was made complete by a popular photo-prop of a 1940s Ford, sometimes called a “moonshine” type automobile.
Whitney Shores was named prom queen and Jacob Pardue, prom king. Shores said, “I was shocked, I had no idea, I don’t go out of my way to make myself known. Jacob Pardue is my best friend’s brother. Overall I was shocked, but I was extremely happy it happened.”
Michael Pruitt, high school yearbook instructor, said the students had a great time. East Wilkes’ Brooklyn Triplett, a senior, is on the yearbook staff.
Triplett said the decor and dress was a hit with the students. “It was really beautiful and it had a lot of time and effort put into it.” Triplett wore a sequined long silver dress with rhinestones that had a cross-tie back. The dress was accentuated with a black and pink feather boa.
The prom included a photo booth where students posed for instant popular photo strips that were free. Triplett called the booth “awesome.”
She said there was a lot of dancing and a little something for everybody played by the deejay. “Everyone was dancing together and there wasn’t anybody left out.”
