After the completion of one bridge project, the Elkin Valley Trails Association (EVTA) chairman said it’s time to start the process on a second bridge.
The first footbridge was completed in May directly above the Shoe Factory Dam. The second bridge is planned to run over the Elkin Creek near the town reservoir north of Elkin.
“Elkin Valley Trails is working toward building a 190-foot bridge in the next two years,” said Dr. Bill Blackley of EVTA.
According to Blackley, EVTA is extending its in-town bike and walking trail to include a unique mountain bike and runners course.
“We will install 17 historical and nature signs on the current trail thanks to Surry Health Department, Elkin Library, Trout Unlimited, Elkin High School, Ken and Pat Nicks of Tampco, town of Elkin, Greenhill Environment and others,” said Blackley.
Blackley said EVTA is adding a number of benches to the trail, completing three Eagle Projects to serve the public, completing two new picnic areas on the greenway/trail, and will be working on multiple section of trail heading to Stone Mountain.
The EVTA leader said working toward completing the trail to Grassy Creek will take about two years, and raising money to pay for these project depends on community support.
“Consider making a pledge over three years to the Elkin Valley Trails to help us more quickly achieve our goals for our greater community in Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin. Join us by volunteering to help with projects,” Blackley said.
