Zaxby’s, a franchised chain of casual dining restaurants offering chicken wings, chicken fingers, sandwiches and salads, is near completion. The building will be turned over to the franchisee on Aug. 29.
The new facility sits on a parcel adjacent to Walmart on CC Camp Road. The general contractor for the construction project is U.S. General Construction, Inc.
“We’re in the final stages and are ready to turn the building over shortly,” said Jerry Strogner, superintendent of the project.
According to Strogner, the 43,000-square-foot project will draw in business. Strogner said after this project is completed, he’s heading to Charlotte to build another restaurant.
Strogner, of Mooresville, drives to the site daily. “Normally I am on the job building in Florida and in other states. It’s good to be local,” he said.
“I am really excited about the spot,” said Bill Walters of Boonville, who works in Elkin. “I think this area of Elkin is the hub of business. Having a Walmart here and other shops, this store will be great.”
“It’s good to see people at work. I’m excited that more jobs are coming to Elkin,” said Lucie Wright of State Road.
The first Zaxby’s restaurant opened in Statesboro, Georgia, in March 1990. The company’s first restaurant outside of Georgia was opened in September 1994 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Zaxby’s now operates in 15 states.
Zaxby’s is “The Official Chicken of Sports Fans” and has collective intellectual property rights at nearly 30 Division I colleges through 2015 through a deal with their football and basketball teams. The sponsorship, brokered by IMG College, includes schools across every state where Zaxby’s is located, representing six major athletic conferences.
A Zaxby’s spokesperson said the franchisee will provide the next steps on grand opening along with employment opportunities.
