RALEIGH — Several youth from Surry County went to the North Carolina State Fair Oct. 17-20 to show livestock.
Surry youths showing were Joe Frank Seal, Preston Cave, Nora Cave, Chandler Branch, Matthew White, Ashton Seal, Hannah Haynes, Wyatt Hooker, Madelyn Hooker, Jackson Hooker, Taylor Goad and Martha Holt.
Preston Cave, son of Phillip and Dena Cave, won four first place ribbons — two first place ribbons showing market steers, one first place showing a Hereford Heifer that he raised on their farm and another first place ribbon with a commercial heifer that was born and raised on their farm. Preston also won two second place ribbons showing Hereford heifers, and he was a finalist in Showmanship for Senior class out of 60 showman.
Nora Cave, daughter of Phillip and Dena Cave, won first place showing her prospect steer.
Chandler Branch, son of David and Candi Branch, won first place with his Simmental Heifer and second place showing his prospect Steer.
Hannah Haynes, daughter of David and Deanne Haynes, won Grand Champion Junior Commercial Heifer showed by Justin Teeter.
In addition, Chandler Branch, son of David and Candi Branch, recently won first place in the South Eastern Pedal Tractor Pull Regionals. He qualified for the regionals by winning the pedal tractor pull at Winston-Salem National Tractor Pull last summer. The finals were held Oct. 19 at the NC State Fair Grand Stand. Chandler pulled a “full pull” and won a trophy and $75.
