The town of Elkin is taking steps to repair a faulty pipeline underneath a downtown street. Road closures are expected over the next month, but the closures will be temporary, said town officials.

“Standard Street is currently closed for safety reasons. Public Works Director Robert Fuller and his staff are evaluating the segment of Standard Street which has an old storm drain pipe running under the road. We are determining if there are any other voids or open pockets under the road which could be a safety risk to the public. If any voids are found, they will be fixed,” said Lloyd Payne, town manager for Elkin.

According to Payne, the town of Elkin is in the process of procuring bids to replace the storm drain line on town property (old Smith Phillips property), which runs under Standard Street across private property, and empties into Big Elkin Creek.

“We are in discussion with the private property owner about securing an easement across his property,” said Payne.

“We hope to have the construction under way in mid to end of February. It depends on getting contractor bids. Standard Street will remain open as long as possible with us anticipating to close it for no more than three to five days when the new storm drain pipe is put into place under the Street,” he said.

Payne said that town staff is very much aware of possible disruptions to the normal flow of traffic on Standard Street and they will do their very best to minimize any issues. Any questions or concerns can be directed to Public Works Director Robert Fuller at 794-6480.
