A duo in downtown Elkin has opened a business at 209 E. Main St. hoping to shake up interest for living a healthier lifestyle.

Midtown Nutrition owners, Lisbeth Morales-Ochoa, 22, and Steven Hughes, 21, teamed up for the nutrition launch saying they were both a natural fit for the new business.

“Midtown Nutrition got the name because it’s in Elkin and was recommended by the barber shop owner. Most people are familiar with Midtown Barber Shop, so tagging off that name made sense because people are already familiar with the location,” said Morales-Ochoa.

Morales-Ochoa said her mother has a similar business in Dobson. “As I saw her gain a lot of customers, I recognized that I was a ready to follow that and pursue helping people maintain a healthy lifestyle. A lot of people don’t know about nutrition. We prepare the drinks and we try to give the motivation for people to incorporate a healthy nutrition in their body,” she said.

Partner Hughes said his interest in the business is perfect and ties nicely with his desire to be a physical trainer or physical therapist. “I recently worked in a factory a few months ago and it hit me. It’s not me, I am not meant for it. It’s great work, but I needed to do other things. Life is short… Especially after losing my daughter, you have to do what makes you happy. This is what we do.”

On July 24, 2013, Hughes and his wife, Mariah Hughes, were traveling westbound on Zephyr Road in Dobson at 9:30 p.m. when a sedan allegedly went into their lane causing a serious wreck. Mariah Hughes was 32 weeks pregnant. The baby had injuries so severe it could not survive. Despite injuries to Steven and Mariah Hughes, the parents found the strength to name their child Sylvia Hughes and attempt to make sense of what just transpired in their lives.

“It was a rough time. My wife and I had to get through it. We still are going through it. Today is the one-year anniversary of Sylvia,” said Hughes. “What I do from this point on is in memory of her. My wife and I are connected to her. She lives through us.”

In Midtown, the customer service of Morales-Ochoa and Hughes is evident. Both present a friendly aura and ability to explain its products as an independent nutritional specialist for Herbalife.

“We encourage aloe because it helps digestive system. It’s mixed with tea that provides you with energy and will help you burn fat. The shake replenishes the body with minerals essential for your body. It’s like a complete meal in powder form. We have target nutrition items, too. Some people may want to gain muscle, lose weight, it varies,” said Morales-Ochoa.

“The whole process costs only $5. It’s really that easy. We can also order products so the customer can take and make items in their home,” said Hughes.
