The owners of Round Peak Vineyards, along with their partners, held a soft opening Friday for Skull Camp Brewing, a microbrewery now producing craft beer in Elkin.
Round Peak Real Estates, LLC owns the property at 2000 N. Bridge St. The property is formerly known as Basin Creek. The company purchased the property in July of 2013 for $190,000. Since, a construction redevelopment of the facility has been in the works.
“We didn’t want any grand opening for our event last week,” said proprietor Ken Gulaian. “We’ll be ready for that in the fall after our restaurant tasting room opens. Last week was a time for people to come in and get a small sample of what’s coming. They got to taste the beer.”
A microbrewery or craft brewery is a brewery that produces a limited amount of beer. Exact definitions vary throughout the beer industry, but the terms are typically applied to breweries that are much smaller than large-scale corporate breweries and are independently owned. Such breweries are generally characterized by their emphasis on the integrity and quality of ingredients, flavor and brewing technique.
Gulaian said that the brewmasters/partners are Kent Yocco and Jeff Leftwich.
“Right now you can head to the rear of the property and buy kegs,” said Gulaian.
In addition to his wife, Kari Gulaian, Gulaian also said that Marie and Jeff Yockel are also partners who have been tremendously involved with the operation.
