The Elkin Police Department has issued a scam alert and are urging residents to exercise caution on what they say is a scam designed to siphon money.

“A person is calling Elkin residents claiming to be a driver for Publisher’s Clearing House,” said Elkin Captain Kim Robison.

“The driver says the person they’re calling has won third prize. The driver indicates that he needs to come by and pick up a check for $200 and the driver will mail the funds to the company so that they may claim the prize,” said Captain Robison.

“This is a scam. In North Carolina, its against the law to have consumers pay money to claim a prize won,” she said.

Police were made aware of the scam after a sharp-listening Elkin resident experienced the solicitation and complained to police.

The Elkin Police Department is investigating the matter.
