Firefighters are still on the scene of a blaze that has destroyed the more than 100-year-old Ararat Missionary Baptist Church building on Jones School Road this afternoon.


There were no injuries reported.


Mount Airy Police Department Detective Brad Quesinberry said the fire was the result of a confirmed lightening strike to the structure. Units on the scene include the Mount Airy Fire Department, Four Way and Franklin Volunteer Fire Departments, Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Surry County Emergency Medical Services and the Mount Airy Police Department.
