Elkin City Schools retirees will be able to attend school-sponsored events and home athletic competitions free, according to a policy passed by the school system’s Board of Education last week.
The board voted unanimously at a 5 p.m. special called meeting on June 29 to issue event passes to retirees with at least three years of full-time experience.
In order to qualify for an event pass, a recipient must have retired receiving full benefits from the state of North Carolina Retirement System; completed a retiree event pass application (online or on paper) and submitted it to the school system’s human resources director.
Once the application has been verified by the human resources director, a photo ID event pass will be made for the retiree to submit at events and athletic competitions. Upon receiving a pass, each retiree will be required to sign a verification form acknowledging receipt and understanding of the rules and guidelines for using it.
Each pass is good for only one admission, and because it will have a photo of the retiree to whom it is assigned, no one else will not be able to use it.
Retirees who fail to follow the rules and guidelines for using their event pass will have it revoked, according to the guidelines. This revocation may be appealed to the human resources director, the policy states. If the appeal is denied, the retiree whose pass was revoked also may appeal it to the superintendent.
The retiree event pass will allow retirees “quick entry or access” to events, thereby allowing them to bypass lines unless they are planning to pay the entry fees for accompanying family members.
According to the policy, the event passes will not allow retirees free admission to specific athletic contests, including state playoffs and tournaments; certain performing arts shows involving professional artists; countywide band and choral events; and other designated events.
Board members discussed the policy at their previous meeting but tabled a vote until after they had decided on what type of pass should be used.
