Interviews will begin this week with candidates for Elkin City Schools’ next superintendent, with a meeting Tuesday night of the board of education held to screen applicants and narrow down those to be interviewed.

The school board announced at the beginning of the week several dates it will be meeting to conduct interviews for the superintendent opening, which came following the retirement of Dr. Randy Bledsoe in July.

Dr. Richard Brinegar, school board chairman, announced at an earlier meeting following the closing date for applicants, that the school system received 51 requests for applications and 21 candidates returned applications. The board members have since worked together looking over applications to narrow those down to candidates they wish to interview.

The first of those meetings was held Tuesday night at the school system’s administrative office for what Brinegar called a screening of candidates. “We have it narrowed to 11, and these 11 we’re going to try to narrow down to six to eight we will do full interviews with,” he said Tuesday morning.

“We were waiting to get superintendent surveys returned, and we’ve got all that information together,” said Brinegar.

Once the screening is completed, and the final six to eight candidates are chosen by the school board, other interview dates are set to take place at the Elkin Center of Surry Community College on North Bridge Street, on Sept. 6 and Sept. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Sept. 13 and Sept. 15 from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

All interviews will be conducted in closed session.

“We’re figuring it that’ll take the month of September to do that, and then we will do second-round interviews with the final three or four,” Brinegar explained of the process.

“We’ve got a good candidate pool. Some are local, I’d say from the Yadkin Valley region, and the Piedmont, but we’ve got good candidates within the state, too,” Brinegar said. “We’ve got a good mix from throughout the state.”

He said the board hopes to have an offer made to a new superintendent by Nov. 1.
