Two more Elkin residents joined the slate of candidates vying for two seats on the Elkin Board of Commissioners Friday before the noon filing deadline, leaving four candidates running for commissioner and one candidate for the role of mayor.
Dr. Skip Whitman, 64, and Jeffrey Eidson, 54, filed their intent to run Friday. Whitman has served as a commissioner for the past four years. Eidson is no newcomer to the election process, as he ran for commissioner during the 2013 race when six people were running for three seats on the board.
Whitman, a local orthopedic surgeon, and Eidson, president of G&B Energy, join retired Elkin fire chief Tommy Wheeler and Surry County Democratic Party Chair John Worth Wiles on the November ballot for the two available seats on the board.
Commissioner J.L. Lowe did not file to run for re-election this year.
In the race for mayor, Sam Bishop is the only candidate to file to be on the ballot. Sitting Mayor Lestine Hutchens announced earlier in the year she would not be seeking re-election for another term.
No other prospective candidates filed prior to the municipal filing deadline Friday in the county.
In the Dobson race for three commissioners seats, the only candidates are the three incumbents, Vonda Comer, Todd Dockery and Robin Testerman.
In Pilot Mountain, the race for two commissioners seats has four candidates, incumbent Kim Quinn and newcomers Evan Cockerham, Mary Nunn Meijboom and Frank Nichols.
The filing period for one city district and one east district seats on the Elkin Board of Education is open until noon on Aug. 8. To date, the incumbents, Dr. Richard Brinegar for city district and Haley Sullivan for east district, are the only two candidates to file.
The Mount Airy Board of Education also is holding its filing period for four seats, with just the incumbents filing so far, Phillip Thacker, Michael Marion, Kate Appler and Wendy Carriker. The deadline to file for those races is Aug. 5 at noon.
