ROARING GAP — In a tradition which began more than 40 years ago, Stone Mountain is offering one of 46 guided First Day Hikes throughout the North Carolina State Park system to mark the beginning of a new year.
Each park has the opportunity to showcase its unique features. Park Ranger Jeffrey Jones has planned the 3.4-mile hike at Stone Mountain for Jan. 1. “I like to pick a different trail for this hike each year,” said Jones, noting there are some participants who join the hike every January.
Following a connector trail to Stone Mountain Loop Trail, participants will reach the top of Stone Mountain, the park’s main attraction, where Jones will share information about the park’s geology. “There are several rocky outcrops along the trail,” said Jones, adding the vista at the top is the highlight.
Rated moderate to strenuous, the route is expected to take about two hours to walk. The hike will begin at the Upper Trail Head parking area at 10 a.m. For more details, call 336-957-8185 or visit ncparks.gov/stone-mountain-state-park.
