One of Santa’s helpers has landed in Elkin, playing hide and seek in various businesses in town as part of a promotion by the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce. Participation in the game could mean prizes for those who find Chance, the chamber elf.

“Chance is the chamber elf who wants to get people into some of the Chamber member businesses and get them acquainted with that business and shop at that business for many years to come,” said Misty Matthews, office manager for the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Every Monday, Chance goes to a new participating business and stays for a week, “in hopes that members and nonmembers will find her and take her picture holding her and post it on Facebook or email it to me,” Matthews said.

On Monday, before she goes to her new location, Chance draws a name from those who found her during the week, and the winner gets a $20 gift certificate from that business location where they found her. “It’s an honest drawing. If you play each week, you are entered in the drawing,” she said.

When Chance goes to her new location on Monday, the chamber staff posts pictures with clues in the photos of where she can be located on the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce Facebook page, in addition to sending it out on the chamber member email list.

Chance will be at her last location in Elkin before returning to the North Pole beginning Dec. 18.

Other chambers have participated in similar promotions, Matthews said of the reason for Chance’s visit to Elkin, a much warmer climate than she is used to this time of year. But Matthews said participation in the hide-and-seek game has been low, as well as in a past hashtag promotion, so she is uncertain if Chance will visit again in 2018.

“Ultimately the goal has been to shop locally when we do those programs,” Matthews said of the elf and hashtag programs, as well as video clips of area chamber members online. “They are very time consuming for our office, which is fine if people participate and get into it. If they don’t participate, it means it’s not suited to our community.”

For this week’s location of Chance, visit the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page, find the post with the pictures, then take a photo and post it in the comments to that clue, or email it to mmatthews@yadkinvalley.org if one doesn’t have Facebook or aren’t comfortable posting a picture on social media.

Prior prizes for Chance included Yadkin Valley General Store, Schonhofen Optometry, Harry’s Place and Ratledge Florist.
