Submission guidelines for calendar events: One-time events may be submitted for placement in the calendar at least two weeks prior to the date of the event. Information should include date, time, place, brief description and contact information, if necessary. Calendars are published as space permits and do not run in every issue of the paper. If a submission is not showing, it is due to the chronological order of the events. Events to be included are at our discretion, and information is subject to editing. • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Surry Community College’s Computer Integrated Machining Club will host a port-a-pit chicken fundraiser in the T Building parking lot of SCC, 630 S. Main St., Dobson. The cost per plate is $9 and includes chicken, baked beans, a roll and slaw. • 8 a.m., Chatham Nursing will host Chatham’s Monster Dash 5K and Fun Run at Elkin Municipal Park, complete with a costume contest, to benefit the Yadkin Valley Senior Center. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with fun run at 8:30 and 5K at 9. There will be raffle drawing, bounce house, and hot dogs for everyone. Cost for the fun run is $15 and the 5K is $30. • Noon to 5 p.m., Austin Fire & Rescue will host Fire Prevention Day celebration at the Austin Ball Park, 190 Roaring Gap Church Road. There will be live music by Crabgrass & Blue Grace, dancing by Foothill Cloggers, bounce houses, face painting, food and drinks, antique fire trucks, fire truck display, games, vendors, fire safety house, kids obstacle course, Spark the Fire Dog, Smokey the Bear, grand prize tickets. • 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., Surry Community College will host a fall traditional music concert featuring the Slate Mountain Ramblers in Room A-121 on the campus, 630 S. Main St., Dobson. The band will play a set from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and again from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. In addition to playing, the performers will discuss the social and historical importance of the old-time music genre in the area.

• Noon to 1 p.m., Breast Cancer Awareness Day will be held at Surry Community College with information and resources on cancer prevention in the Knights’ Grill on campus, 630 S. Main St., Dobson.

• 2 to 6:30 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Jones Intermediate School, 2170 Riverside Drive, Mount Airy.

• 2 to 5 p.m., an Austin School Reunion will be held for all students who attended Austin Elementary at the Austin Meal Site and Austin Ball Park. Those attending should bring a lawn chair. • 5 to 8 p.m., Surry Community College will host its annual Halloween Spooktacular in the college’s gymnasium at 630 S. Main St., Dobson. Children in the community are invited to attend and partake in various Halloween-themed games and activities including a costume contest with prizes. Participants will be able to take part in a hayride around campus and explore a haunted trail. Money raised during the event will be used to fund Surry’s Angel Tree for students in need during the holiday season.

• 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Millennium Charter Academy, 500 Old Springs Road, Mount Airy.

• 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson, will host a chili cook-off and baking competition fundraiser for the United Fund at the Betty Kay Vaughn Clock Tower. Faculty and staff will go head to head in a competition to decide who makes the best chili and who is the best baker. Tasting will cost $5.

Doors open at 6, Luke Mears Band takes the stage at 7 p.m., and Nick Moss Band will perform at 8 p.m. Halloween costumes are weclome. There will be beverages available for purchase.
