On Jan. 9, the Elkin Board of Commissioners approved a “Jake Brake” ordinance, regulating the use of the braking systems within town limits.

The purpose of the ordinance is to prohibit the excessive, loud, unusual, or explosive use of engine and compressed air-braking devices in town. It also prohibits the use or operation of any engine brake, compression brake, or mechanical exhaust device designed to add in the braking or deceleration or any vehicle, unless it is necessary to avoid imminent danger.

The penalty for a violation of the ordinance is a Class 3 misdemeanor and punishable by a $50 fine.

Emergency vehicles are exempt from the ordinance.

Completion of the erection of signs at the town limits and where necessary to alert drivers of the rule took place in the last few weeks, and the ordinance is being enforced, noted officials with the Elkin Police Department.
