THURMOND — A 2-year-old accidentally shot himself in the chest Sunday and was taken to Brenner’s Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem where he remains. No further information about his condition was available.
According to the Investigation Report filed by the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, “The parents stated that the child got the gun from the driver’s side door of the vehicle the child was in and accidentally shot himself in the chest.”
His parents drove him to Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital emergency room where he was airlifted to Brenner’s.
The Diamondback .380 Semi-automatic had one round fired and was located in a 2001 Dodge Dakota.
The investigation is still ongoing.
